Chest Pain Evaluation & Management

Consultant Paediatrician & Cardiac Imaging Specialist
MBBS, FRCPCH, EACVI (Cardiac Imaging)

Chest pain in children can be alarming, yet most causes are benign. At Dr Neeraj Jain’s practice, we provide expert assessment to distinguish harmless musculoskeletal or gastrointestinal aches from more serious cardiac or pulmonary conditions—ensuring your child gets the right diagnosis, reassurance, and treatment plan.

What Is Paediatric Chest Pain?

Chest pain may stem from a variety of sources: muscle strain, costochondritis, acid reflux, anxiety, or, rarely, heart or lung disease. Our multidisciplinary approach combines careful history-taking, physical examination, and targeted testing to pinpoint the cause and guide appropriate care.

When to Seek Specialist Assessment

Refer your child if they experience:

  • Chest pain with exercise, palpitations or breathlessness

  • Pain radiating to the arm, back, jaw or shoulder

  • Recurrent pain waking them from sleep

  • Associated symptoms such as dizziness, fainting or sweating

  • Family history of early cardiac disease or sudden death

  • Signs of respiratory distress, persistent cough or fever

Our Diagnostic Approach

Comprehensive History & Exam

Detailed exploration of pain characteristics—onset, duration, location, triggers, and relieving factors.

Echocardiography

Ultrasound imaging to assess heart structure, function, valve integrity, and pericardial effusion.

Blood Tests & Biomarkers

Cardiac enzymes (troponin), inflammatory markers (CRP, ESR) and other labs to detect myocarditis, pericarditis or systemic illness.

Electrocardiogram (ECG)

Resting 12-lead ECG to look for rhythm issues, conduction delays, or signs of myocarditis and pericarditis.

Chest X-Ray & Pulmonary Function Tests

When musculoskeletal or respiratory causes are suspected, we evaluate lungs, bones and cartilage.

Advanced Imaging

Cardiac MRI or CT angiography for detailed evaluation of myocardium, coronary arteries or complex anatomy when needed.

Conditions We Differentiate

Musculoskeletal

(costochondritis, muscle strain, rib injury)

Gastrointestinal

(acid reflux, oesophagitis, gas pain)

Cardiac

(myocarditis, pericarditis, arrhythmias, congenital anomalies)

Pulmonary

Psychogenic

(asthma, pleuritis, pneumothorax)

(anxiety, panic attacks)

  • Multidisciplinary Care
Collaboration with gastroenterologists, pulmonologists, physiotherapists and psychologists as indicated.

  • Ongoing Monitoring
Scheduled follow-ups with repeat ECGs, echocardiograms or pulmonary tests to ensure resolution and guide return to normal activities.

  • Q: Is tilt-table testing safe for my child?
A: Yes. It’s performed under close medical supervision with continuous monitoring. While it can induce fainting in controlled conditions, staff are ready to return your child to a flat position immediately and safely.
  • Q: Can my child continue to play sports?
A: After evaluation, we’ll advise on safe participation. Many children with benign syncope continue sports with simple precautions. Those with exercise-induced arrhythmias may need specific restrictions until treated.
  • Q: How long does the evaluation take?
A: An initial cardiology consultation lasts about 45–60 minutes. Depending on findings, diagnostic tests may be scheduled on the same day or at follow-up visits.
